EQ (Emotional Quotient)

EQ (Emotional Quotient) a.k.a emotional intelligence

the ability to:

  1. acknowledge, assess, understand and manage emotions of oneself, and;
  2. identify the emotions of others.

Importance

EQ gained popularity under the auspice of Daniel Goleman with his book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.

“Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times best sellers list for a year-and-a-half. Named one of the 25 “Most Influential Business Management Books” by TIME, it has been translated into 40 languages. The Harvard Business Review called emotional intelligence (EI) ‘a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea.’ ” Goodreads

Our emotions are part of who we are. They drive us (if we let them), and they can hurt us, if we do not know how to control them.

Organizations caught on and some are now hiring based on EQ tests. Harvard scientists did a study and educators are stating that EQ is the true differentiator between those who are successful and those who are not.

The positive effects of EQ in business are just the beginning. Having a high EQ has transformative effects in every area of life. When we are able to acknowledge and understand our emotions we are better able to identify how to effectively utilize them, and to stay motivated and driven towards our goals. When we control our emotions we have more control over how we want to interact with the world, we build stronger connections, we feel more fulfilled.
